Day 17 (July 22, 2018): All good things come to an end

The original plan had been to get up with the sun, check out of the hotel, head back to Amsterdam, store ou bags at the station, sightsee for a few hours, and then head to Schiphol Airport. But yesterday really “did us in”, so we desperately needed a slight sleep-in before the trek home.  And that’s exactly what we did! A leisurely breakfast, a 10:30AM checkout, and then off to Rotterdam Central Station by Tram for our Dutch Rail journey to  Schiphol. By 11:30AM we were in a brutal queue to check in for the flight, which lasted an hour.  A quick lunch at an overcrowded business lounge, and off to the gate for an on time departure. A three-hour transit at Keflavik’s crowded airport, and we boarded a sparkling new Icelandair Boeing for home.  What an incredible trip this has been.  Poland, Slovakia, Netherlands;  12 cities. Day 16 (July 21, 2018):

This was the last full day of our vacation, and we purposely saved “the big enchilada” of the 12 cities on our European tour for the end: Amsterdam. With 850,000 people, and as the capital of the Netherlands, it definitely dwarfs the other seven Dutch cities we visited in terms of size and depth of sights to take in. It also has a much more Bohemian side and — as the average person’s stereotype would suggest — a very liberal approach to social and lifestyle issues. Say the name “Amsterdam”, and people tend to think legalized drugs and legalized prostitution.  The city receives its name from the Amsel river that flows through the city. It is the only natural waterway — the myriad of canals that encircle Amsterdam are all man-made. Waterways are filled with boats, less busy than Venice’s canals (Amsterdam has a full network of driveable streets, unlike Venice), but quite busy all the same.  The train from Rotterdam to Amsterdam takes as little as 41 minutes, with just one stop ...

Day 6 (July 10, 2018): Day of 1600 stairs

Today was the day to pull back the layers of Gdansk.  What a city!  What a history!  It had a great impact on us, and we concluded over dinner -- as we watched Croatia beat England in the World Cup semi-final -- that coming here was the best location we could have possibly chosen in Poland. We left the hotel at 9AM and made it back by 8PM.  'Twas a long day, but the weather was perfect.  And why the reference to 1600 stairs in the blog entry title?  Well, we climbed the highest bellfry we have EVER climbed (at 409 stairs up and 409 down);  we climbed the tower at City Hall (283 stairs up and 283 down);  and we climbed at least 100 stairs up and 100 down at the 'Crane'.  Add it all up, and it represents a good workout! The photo captions tell the story of the day here in Gdansk. We are off to Slovakia at noon tomorrow.  It is supposed to pour rain through the night and into tomorrow, so it will be a good day to fly. Good night ...
